When the government opened California to homesteaders, unexpected trouble arose, the Spanish had granted huge tacks of land to their countrymen. And these grants were indirect conflict with the titles of the incoming homesteaders now both factions claimed ownership and were ready to defend their claims with six guns and bullets. Tragedy such as the west had never known before threatened the peace of two nations.
